Little kids love those bumpy vinyl raised relief maps that cover a terrain in great detail. Granted, little kids will not use the maps for any practical purposes such as utilizing the maps to locate a destination and chart a course, although a case could be made that the kids gaining a second hand knowledge of geography through reading the raised relief maps has practical purposes. Whatever the true, ultimate benefits the kids will derive from the maps, kids just love running their finger across the tactile topography on display on these finely crafted maps.

Unfortunately, when it comes to learning a subject – any subject – children have a tendency to tune the instructor out because the presentation of the subject matter may be displayed in a sterile or dull manner. Since little kids react to things that are fun, dull lectures on seemingly boring topics will never engage their attention.

Now, the key here is a subject is only ‘seemingly” dull. No subject can be dull if it is presented in a manner that is interesting. When a geography or history course opts to utilize vinyl raised relief maps, then the interest level of the young students may be piqued. Children are creatures who respond to visual stimuli and the presence of neat looking raised relief maps may just attract their attention.

The mere presence of a raised relief maps by themselves is not automatically going to develop an interest in any subject that will translate into a lifelong desire to learn, but it is a great way to introduce material in such a way that children will find the subject worth more than a mere passing glance or interest. From this initial interest, hopefully the children will take the subject serious enough to do well in it and let that disciplined approach to learning carry over into other areas.
